Clemson celebrated seniors with a victory over 20th ranked UNC Tarheels on Saturday with a final of 31-20. While the Tarheels were first on the scoreboard, the Tiger defense was relentless against Drake Maye’s offense and racked up four sacks, five tackles for a loss, and 10 broken up passes. UNC was held to 4 of 14 on third downs and 2 of 5 on fourth down tries. Saturday’s game resulted in Maye’s lowest completion percentage of the season with just 16 for 36 passing, one touchdown and 209 yards.
For a second straight 400+ yardage week, Clemson’s offense had 89 plays and totaled 466 yards (both 200 rushing and passing). Cade Klubnik’s offensive line helped to put up 247 rushing yards and did not allow a sack. Klubnik ran for 44 yards and scored one touchdown with only three seconds left in the first half.
Will Shipley is back in fine fashion and boasted 126 yards on 18 tries, 53 yards in receiving, scoring one touchdown. Phil Mafah followed suit with 84 yards rushing of his own and a touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, Clemson had some magical plays. To start the momentum off, Peter Wood forced a fumble inside the 10-yard line to keep the Tarheels scoreless. The most notable play followed in the next possession when Nate Wiggins literally sprouted wings to chase Omarion Hampton down 63 yards, stripping the ball out of Hampton’s hands just before he crossed the goal line. The play was ruled a touchback and Clemson took possession of the ball.
