Clemson vs. LSU: The Battle of the Tigers Is Here

Let’s be honest, Tiger fans: 2025 was not a good time to be a Tiger.
Clemson finished the season 7-6, a far cry from the national championship expectations that surrounded this program entering the year. But that was 2025.
It’s 2026 now.
And with a new season comes a new team, a new quarterback, and a new opportunity.
Clemson opens the 2026 season on Saturday, September 5, traveling down to Baton Rouge to take on LSU in one of the biggest opening-weekend games in the country. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with ESPN’s College GameDay also heading to LSU for the matchup.
Two Tigers. Two Death Valleys. One huge opening-night showdown.
It’s Vizzina’s Time
For Clemson, the biggest question heading into this game is obvious:
Can Christopher Vizzina be the guy?
Vizzina has waited his turn. The former four-star quarterback came to Clemson with plenty of talent, stayed patient behind Cade Klubnik, and continued to put in the work.
Now, it’s his time.
There is no more waiting behind Cade. There is no more wondering when his opportunity will come.
This is Vizzina’s team now.
And the good news? Clemson has plenty of weapons around him.
At wide receiver, the Tigers have talent with Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore. At running back, Clemson has Gideon Davidson and Chris Johnson Jr. The offensive line has talent as well, with players such as Collin Sadler and Braden Jacobs.
The pieces are there.
The question is whether Vizzina can get the ball to them.
If he can, Clemson could be in for a very interesting night.
And Don’t Forget About Tait
There is another quarterback name Clemson fans need to remember: Tait Reynolds.
The freshman phenom is right there in the quarterback battle, and while Vizzina has the experience, Reynolds has the talent and potential to make his presence known.
There is a good chance both quarterbacks could see the field.
But if Vizzina struggles, I want to see Reynolds get a real opportunity.
Don’t throw him into the game with Clemson backed up inside its own 10-yard line and expect him to save the day. If he gets his chance, let him play with the starters. Give him a full quarter and a legitimate opportunity to show what he can do.
At the end of the day, Clemson needs to find out what it has at quarterback. The Playmakers Are Ready
This Clemson offense has too much talent to waste.
Bryant Wesco Jr. is a player who can change the game. T.J. Moore is another weapon defenses have to account for. Gideon Davidson gives Clemson another explosive option in the backfield.
The formula is simple:
Get the ball to your playmakers.
Clemson doesn't need Vizzina to go out there and throw for 400 yards. He needs to play smart, protect the football, make the throws that are there and let the guys around him make plays.
If he can do that, Clemson has a chance.
Defense Has to Set the Tone
On the other side of the ball, Clemson has a leader in Sammy Brown.
And let’s be real: Sammy Brown is one of the best linebackers in the country.
With Brown leading the defense, Clemson also brings back key pieces such as Will Heldt and Ashton Hampton.
But against LSU, the defense has one major job:
Get pressure on Sam Leavitt.
Leavitt is one of the biggest reasons LSU is receiving so much hype entering 2026. He transferred to LSU from Arizona State and enters the season as Lane Kiffin’s quarterback. LSU has also completely reshaped its roster under Kiffin, bringing in more than 40 transfers during his first offseason in Baton Rouge.
That means Clemson cannot let Leavitt sit comfortably in the pocket.
Make him uncomfortable.
Make him move.
Make him earn every yard.
Is Lane Kiffin’s $40 Million Roster Going to Work? This is one of the biggest storylines surrounding the game.
Lane Kiffin is making his LSU debut, and there is no shortage of expectations.
Kiffin has completely changed the look of this LSU roster, using the transfer portal aggressively to build a team that he believes can compete immediately.
But now comes the fun part.
Does it actually work?
Was the massive roster overhaul worth it?
Or could Clemson walk into Baton Rouge and ruin the beginning of the Lane Kiffin era? We’re about to find out.
The Keys to the Game for Clemson
If Clemson wants to pull off the upset, I believe it comes down to three things:
1. Get pressure on Sam Leavitt.
Do not let LSU’s quarterback get comfortable. Make him feel Clemson’s defensive line and linebackers all night.
2. Get the ball to the playmakers.
Bryant Wesco Jr., T.J. Moore and Gideon Davidson need opportunities. Clemson has the weapons. Now it has to use them.
3. Let Vizzina build confidence.
Don’t ask him to win the game by himself. Get him into rhythm early, make easy throws, establish the run and let him settle into the game.
And if Vizzina struggles?
Give Tait Reynolds a fair shot.
My Prediction
This is going to be a wild one.
LSU has the home-field advantage. Tiger Stadium will be rocking. College GameDay is going to be there. Lane Kiffin is making his debut. LSU has a talented roster and plenty of expectations.
But I have a feeling Clemson is going to surprise some people.
I think the Clemson defense does just enough to make life difficult for Leavitt, and I think Vizzina finds a way to get the ball to Clemson’s playmakers when it matters most.
My final prediction: Clemson 20, LSU 17.
So Tiger fans, get ready.
Saturday night. Prime time. Two Tigers. One Death Valley.
And when the dust settles, I think the real Tigers are going to come out on top. Go Tigers!
